How to Choose the Right Pool Cleaner for You
Owning a glistering pool is a true bliss but cleaning it every time is another story.
Your pool is easier to keep clean if you are consistent about it. The more time that passes between cleanings, the more effort you’ll need to invest to get it back to sparkling.
An automatic pool cleaner is your best tool for establishing a regular cleaning routine.
Among the automatic pool cleaners, there are three main options
- robotic
- pressure (or pressure-side)
- suction cleaners
Each type of automatic pool cleaner has its own pros and cons, so you’ll need to determine what best works for your needs. When making your selection, the type of pool you have should be considered as well.
Robotic Pool Cleaners
Robotic pool cleaners are highly intelligent and efficient machines that clean your pool for you via bypassing the main filtering system of your pool.

Simply drop it inside the pool and leave it to do its job.
The cleaner will work its way around the pool surface, using small brushes and vacuum pressure to eliminate everything from dirt and algae to debris of all sizes.
The higher-end robotic cleaners can climb walls, work over stairs, and scrub all the way to the waterline.
Energy efficient – robotic pool cleaners run on very little power, about the same amount as a standard light bulb.
Pressure or Pressure-Side Pool Cleaners
Pressure side cleaners attach to the return (pressure side) of your circulation system.

This is the side of the plumbing that returns clean, filtered water to your pool.
Pressure side pool cleaners use the power of the water pressure to pick up dirt and debris and gather it in an attached bag.
The main benefit of pressure pool cleaners are that they distribute the clean, filtered, water around your pool.
It’s common practice by some pool owners to leave a strain side vacuum cleanser in their pool even if swimming rather than moving it in and out of the pool
Pressure pool vacuums are clog-free.
Capable of handling larger debris – pressure pool cleaners can vacuum up a large assortment of debris.
Pressure pool cleaners can run on a timer (with a booster pump).
Suction Pool Cleaners
Suction Pool Cleaners are a powerful and budget friendly option for families to keep their pool clean and healthy.

A suction side pool cleaner uses pool pump pressure to remove dirt and debris from your pool and are often run automatically or on a timer.
These are cleaners that attach to the suction side of your plumbing.
The suction side refers to the pipes and fittings that bring water out of the pool to be filtered; that water that’s being “sucked” out of the pool through the filter pump.
Usually that is the pool skimmer, although some older pools have a dedicated vacuum line.
